In the early days drag racing was an outlaw sport, played
out on the streets of North America, the rules were
simple, cars were pitched against each other over a
predetermined distance from a standing start, first
across the line took the win. That was more than 50
years ago and though the sport has come a long way since
then there’s still something special about heads-up
racing. In 2006 the Outlaw Flat Four Drag Racing Club
brought this tradition to the UK VW scene for the first
time with an all new race series.
With
Drag Racing originating in North America as you might
expect it was the cars from Detroit that dominated the
sport through its formative years but in time imported
cars started to make a mark on the sport. One of the
earliest of these was the VW and the Volkswagen flat
four engine has maintained a mighty presence to this
day. There are probably almost as many tuning options
for the flat four as any of the favoured V8 configurations
and despite continued advancements in technology a built
VW motor can still hold out against the myriad of engines
in today’s sport such as those from Japan. The
Outlaw Flat Four Drag Racing Club intends to maintain
the profile of the VW flat four by not only running
its own series but also through organising feature races
with other parts of the UK's racing community and in
so doing hopes to help maintain the momentum the UK
racing scene as whole has gained in recent years. For
