This event has always been a favourite with the Outlaws and true to form we managed to pull together quite a respectable assemblage of 14 club cars plus a fair few Europeans in the shape of Udo Becker, the hard core punch drinking DAS squad from Belgium and the ever impressive CSP razor edge Typ 3 Ghia from Germany with Ron Lummus behind the wheel. We also had a few prospective members in tow plus a number of guests too. In fact there were so many VW’s in the pits it looked more like Bug Jam.
Saturday morning saw us waking to the unmistakable sound of rain which set in for the day. This put and end to the days track fun but did give us time to fiddle with our cars, talk bollocks with our mates and plan the evening’s menu. Thanks to Lucas for the finest of paellas and Steve (birthday boy) for the very moreish rum!
Sunday and Monday brought clearer skies with a marginal crosswind, a great opportunity to give it some beans on the track. I won’t go into a blow-by-blow account of everybody’s times but offer a few edited highlights instead:
Pete Shattock managed an 11.87 on street tyres with his new JPM-built mouse motor, which is pretty damned good for the first time out. Then come Monday he slipped on a set of slicks and was down into the 11.6’s - good work.
Matt Keene was running consistent mid tens until a cam follower threw the rattle out of the cot and ended his weekend prematurely.
Lee C was having a grand time and went home with a couple of 11 second PB’s to his name, marvellous.
After a promising start, running a 10.39, the old timer Bernie got a little confused, tried reversing down the track end up on top of the barrier! Thankfully no injuries but nurse has promised to up the medication.
Lee Maynard finally remembered where he’d parked his car and managed to bring it out for a spank, this time with a fully operational clutch. Although his times weren’t quite what he wanted (12.20’s) the MPH figures showed promise (124), just a little more boost needed off the line for some low 11’s or maybe even a 10.
The CSP boys were doing some serious test and tunage with data logging on everything bar the drivers tan. They got some vital information and ran very impressive numbers (low 9’s) and on the way back home popped into my work for a play in a B17 bomber. Don’t mention the war…
As for me, well, following a couple of half arsed runs I managed to strike oil halfway down the track and ended up doing an 80mph drift toward the Armco. “Blimey” I said, “this won’t do”, or words to that effect. Thankfully, due to my awesome abilities behind the wheel and the guy in the other lane having effective brakes (sorry mister) the ensuing impact was just a flesh wound so consequently the old ’66 will get to do something terrifying again soon.
All in all everyone seemed to have a good time, especially Glen Collins who got his first 12’s in the bag, Anton who cuts a mean light (.1 reaction) and the Belgian’s who were never off the track!
Next up is the MSA Spring Nationals at Santa Pod over the weekend of 19th-20th June. Be there or have a letter from your mum.
